One Kilometer

Within the century we foresee many habitats of different sizes materializing in our planet's orbit. Some will serve as research outposts to carry out experiments in the absence of gravity pursuing pure scientific knowledge or industrial applications. Some will be built for tourism and the novelty of seeing our planet from the refocusing perspective that only space can provide. Staging and supply habitats will fuel and launch missions to remote locations while others still will facilitate the production of parts to build yet more habitats.

Eventually there will be habitats created with the intention of settling occupants for truly permanent lives in space. Most these habitats will have one thing in common: the need for gravity. The One Kilometer habitat concept was created with this in mind and would spin at nearly one full rotation per minute to simulate the gravity of Earth.  A habitat of this size would be necessary as humans look to colonizing the solar system and much resource exploitation and industry moves off world.
