On The Farm

This image represents a concept for an orbital recirculating aquaponics system.  On a space habitat—the ultimate island economy—it may be too expensive to import food for a sustained population of any size.   In light of this, the most practical way to feed people may be to grow a majority of food in the habitat.  A portion of the structure would be designated for this purpose and outfitted with a mostly self sustaining automated system that leverages a symbiotic relationship created between plants and fish.

In this integrated system, the water the fish are raised in would be treated to remove the build up of toxic waste products.  Non-toxic nutrients and organic waste matter would be circulated through the soil-less crop system, simultaneously boosting their growth and purifying the water. Crops would be monitored by AI and harvested at the perfect time using autonomous robots equipped with advanced color and infrared depth sensors.  Composting worms are added to grow beds to help break down excess plant and fish waste preventing ammonia spikes, suppressing disease and providing extra nutrients to the system.
